In 2005, Braveheart Bio-Dog Academy made an important breakthrough in Detection–Sniffer Dog-K9 (Canine) training for the detection of narcotics and explosives. The research was undertaken by Braveheart Bio-Dog Academy founder John Greyvenstein (BSc Honours Zoology, MSc Genetics) together with South African scientist Dr. Fanie van der Walt.
Research on Detection–Sniffer Dog-K9 Training Using Vapour Strips
The research, conducted in Braveheart’s own laboratory in Rayton near Pretoria, eliminated major issues in Detection–Sniffer Dog-K9 training for narcotics and explosives. Vapour strips containing pure odours were developed, preventing contamination from other odours and eliminating false indications. These safe training aids pose no risk to trainers or dogs and cannot be abused. They remain contaminant-free with correct storage precautions.

John Greyvenstein emphasises that training has moved away from dangerous live substances. This new approach avoids side effects and focuses on proper socialisation, a formative training phase, and continuous maintenance training.
